Greeting message from Undersecretary Schmidt

Upon taking office as Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, a position I have been honored with by the President of the Republic, I wish to convey a very special greeting to the officials of our Ministry, both in Chile and in our missions abroad.

In the year Chile celebrates the Bicentennial of its Independence we have had to face a huge and unexpected challenge, as a consequence of the devastating earthquake that struck our country, what makes us redouble our efforts to contribute as Foreign Ministry in providing relief to the numerous victims and the urgent task of reconstruction.

I am certain that each one of you, as you have previously demonstrated it - on many occasions - will continue to focus your efforts towards this momentous goal.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plays a preponderant role in the strategy of national development and in the promotion and defense of the country’s interests. To fulfill its role, it has a trained and professional team.
I will strive to create the necessary conditions so that each one of you, fully meet the quality and efficiency standards needed, as well as improving the instruments aimed at recognizing merit and distinguishing efforts.

Throughout my career as a diplomat, I have witnessed the spirit of public service and dedication to serve the interests of the Nation, which characterizes the work of this Foreign Ministry.

I invite you to renew that commitment, in order to project a Foreign Minister consistent with current times and demands.
