Chile is reelected to FAO Council

During the 37th session of the FAO Conference, held in Rome on July 1, Chile was reelected as Council Member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for the period 2012- 2015. The FAO Council is the executive body of the Conference, responsible for the implementation of the decisions taken by the highest body of the organization. The Council is composed of 49 Member States, each one elected by the Conference for a three-year term, renewing one-third of its members every year.
FAO is the United Nations agency responsible for safeguarding food security and ensuring that people have a regular access to high-quality food to lead active and healthy lives. Its main concerns are to improve nutrition, increase agricultural productivity, raise living standards of the rural population and contribute to the growth of global economy.
The reelection of Chile, supported by the Latin American Countries Group, is a reflection of the outstanding role that our country has played in the promotion of food policies at multilateral level that favor the development of the region and meet its interests.
