Chile is elected member of the IOC Executive Council

The General Assembly of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) – held at UNESCO in Paris – elected last week the countries that will make up this Commission’s Executive Council. Chile was reelected to continue its work for the period 2011-2013.

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) was set up by the General Conference of UNESCO in December 1960. The IOC is responsible for the international work in oceanography and the various programs developed for a better management of marine resources and ocean governance.

The task of the agency’s Executive Council is to support the work of the IOC, in order to provide technical advice to countries on oceanographic matters related to the regularization of oceans, scientific research and the knowledge of these topics.
