Chilean citizen elected member of important Committee of the International Seabed Authority
During the 17th period of sessions of the Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), Chile was re-elected as member of the Legal and Technical Commission of this international organization for the period 2012-2016.
The Chilean candidate elected, who will assume his duties next month, is Cristián Ricardo Ramírez (Oceanographer and PhD in Earth Sciences with a major in Geophysics. Cristián Ramírez currently serves at the Scientific Department of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH).
The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is an autonomous international organization established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 and the 1994 Agreement on the Implementation of Part XI of the aforementioned Convention. The Seabed Authority is the organization through which the States Parties to the Convention organize and control the activities carried out in the seabed and subsoil beyond the limits of national jurisdiction (the Area), with a view to managing its resources.
