- III Preparatory Conference for the Commission of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization
Monday, January 30, 2012
Today, Deputy Foreign Minister Fernando Schmidt attended the inauguration of the III Preparatory Conference for the establishment of the Committee of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization.
In his speech he said, “Chile has been a staunch promoter of the adoption of internal conservation measures, among them most notable is to limit the total catch of mackerel. Accordingly, we have fully complied with the commitments adopted in Cali, aware of the need to adopt all measures derived from the reports of the Scientific Committee.”
He then added, “We are concerned that these internal measures have not produced the expected results, both by failure of some States to comply with them and their lack of commitment. States which, having signed the Convention, have distanced themselves from its spirit and its overriding objective of preserving and regulating resources. We earnestly appeal to all the countries members of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization to deepen and honor their commitments to this organization, and ultimately to marine biodiversity in the area, which is our bounden duty to the future of oceans and our nations. Only then we will be showing consistency with sustainability and responsible multilateralism.”
The inauguration was also attended by Minister of Economy Pablo Longueira, the Undersecretary for Fisheries, Pablo Galilea, and the President of the Meeting, Bill Mansfield.
