Wednesday, August 3, 2011

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno, met at midday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

During the meeting they reviewed the region’s situation and global events, where Chile and the United States share common interests. In this regard, the U.S. Secretary of State highlighted the importance of several meetings that both authorities have held over time, as well as the leading role that our country has acquired at regional and international levels.

After the meeting, Minister Moreno said that one of the issues of interest addressed was the goal of turning Chile into “a bilingual country, where all children will have the opportunity to speak English.” To that end, we studied various options on how to materialize this, among them, “sending teachers of English to Chile. “

The same scheme is intended to be implemented through ProChile in the business field, in order to enable “people from small Chilean firms to can come to work at U.S. companies.” We also intend to encourage U.S. citizens to work in Chile in “those companies and areas where Chile has a comparative advantage and we have world-class companies.”

In the evening, Minister Moreno will attend accompanied by the Minister of Mining, Hernán de Solminihac, the inauguration of the exhibition “Against all odds:  Rescue operation at the Chilean Mine” at the National Museum of Natural History, which recalls the rescue of the 33 miners of Atacama.
